News

During Sep 2008 to Jul 2009, Terry Fox Laboratory launched a monthly photo competition. This competition intended to explore new talent as fellow TFLers use photographic images to capture and illustrate their work and life in the course of fighting cancer. Each month, winners of the competition received fabulous cash prizes and their winning pictures were showcased on the front page of the TFL website.  See rules for details.

Any inquiries should be sent to Amy Yu (ayu@bccancer.bc.ca) or Amanda Kotzer (akotzer@bccrc.ca).

: Blend of 4 pictures highlighting the Hoodless Lab members educating high school kids in the art of lab research.

Winner: Kieran O'Neil (Brinkman Lab)
Title: Cracking the Whip
Description: The desktop of a bioinformaticist. The red dials on the far right show processor activity - I'm really crackign the whip here, with 6 or 8 scores running at 100%.

Winner: Alex Chang (Karsan Lab)
Title: in search of embedded codes
Description: how researchers search for certain phenotyp: 1) "T"-section so fembryonic heart staining for endothelial cells; 2) "F"-OCT embedded organs ready for characterization; 3) "L"-a basic DNA gel testing the genotype of mice

April 2009
Winner: Sonya Lam (Weng Lab)
Title: Little stemps in DNA analysis
Description: This shows the simple steps involved in analyzing DNA. Ethidium bromide is used in the process of running an agarose gel and then the gel separates the necessary bands for DNA analysis. Simple but effective.

Winner: Ying zhang (Mager Lab)
Title: Blossoming Spring Arrives at BCCRC
Description: The strip consists of the following three photos (left to right):
• The blossoming cherry tree around our building (green filer used)
• The sketch graph of BCCRC front door (halftone pattern effect)
• The paint graph of magnolia flowers in front of BCCRC (brush paint effect)

March 2009

Winner: Eaves Lab

Title: TFL is the best place on earth!!
Description: After a long Saturday retreat at their PI’s house, Team Hematopoiesis still thinks that TFL is the best place on earth!!

February 2009
Winner: Dr. Nagarajan Kannan (Eaves Lab)
Title: Stem cells answer everything. Scientist can now re-create miniaturized solar surfaces using a novel breast stem/progenitor cell model
Description: The photo-strip depicts different surfaces of sun. One of the 5 images is of the red hot solar surface and the other 4 are photo-mimics of FACS sorted breast stem/progenitor cell enriched population cultured in wells of 96-well dishes as seen under Zeiss inverted microscope using Canon SLR camera. I have changed the brightness and contrast of the images using Microsoft image editor to create the photo-mimic effect of the solar surface.

Winner: Giovanna Cameron (Clinical Cell Therapy)

Title: Cyclotron in the Making
Description: Occasionally we take a break to check on the progress of the Cyclotron building site...more to follow.

January 2009
First Place Winner: Ali Hassan (Hoodless Lab)
Title: Piece of the TFL genome
Description: A continuous strand of DNA created by the blending of knitted DNA, Hoodless Lab macroscopic DNA and the DNA staircase.

Second Place: Ying Zhang (Mager Lab)

Title: TFL biologists help life thrive in the harsh winter
Description: The middle photo is our BCCRC building on a sunny winter day. The left photo shows the 15 lovely newborn baby fish of the Mager Lab. The right photo shows one of our young biologists (Arefeh Rouhi) working hard on the NK cell project at the bench during the holiday.

November 2008
First Place Winner: Dr. Mark Hills (Lansdorp Lab)

Title: Working late
Description: Trying to convey the running around while working late on a weekend. Ironically, since it took me bloody ages to do, it highlights the most constant and important part of working late; procrastination.
There were 4 separate photos stitched together to make this panorama, which is why I appear 4 times.

Second Place Winner: Melisa Hamilton (Krystal Lab)
Title: Autumn in the Terry Fox Lab
Description: The scenes of autumn can be found both inside and outside the lab! The vibrant colours of red, orange, and yellow exist inside our incubators in cell culture flasks, in dishes of Methycellulose colony forming assays, and of course, on the leaves of the trees outside the BCCRC.

October 2008
First Place Winner: Dr. Mark Hills (Lansdorp Lab)
Title: STELA Work
Description:
Encompasses three lab "staples", from the monotonous; mixing solutions (left) and centrifugation (right), to the muted excitement of getting bands on a gel after months of setbacks(centre)
Second Place Winner: Ali Hassan (Hoodless Lab)
Title: We're quite 'cultured' around here
Description:
Hoodless Lab hard at work in the tissue culture area.
Tissue culture close up – Sticker says it all.
Incubator – Date taken – Tissue culture incubator filled with plates of cells.
Caption for strip – We’re quite ‘cultured’ around here

September 2008
First Place Winner: Jennifer Danielson (Clinical Cell Therapy Lab)
Title: Chillin' in the Clinical Cell Therapy Lab
Description:
phase freezers in the Clinical Cell Therapy Laboratory that are used during the processing and storage of cellular products for the Leukemia/BMT Program.

Second Place Winner: Ali Hassan (Hoodless Lab)
Description:
Embryo Picture - In situ hybridization of novel endoderm gene in embryonic 8.5 day mouse embryo. The staining seems to mark the very posterior part of the gut and highlights a peculiar ‘bump’ in that region of the embryo that may give rise to specialized cell types.
Picture of Sam - Sam Lee, graduate student of the Hoodless Lab, hard at work.
Picture of cryostat - The Hoodless Lab’s invaluable sectioning juggernaut, the cryostat. Day, evening, or night, it produces beautiful section after beautiful section without complain.
Picture of Pavle - Pavle strumming his guitar and producing his melodious voice at Rachel’s Farewell at the 15th floor lunch room. Showcases one of the many non-labwork talents of the Hoodless Lab, and that we do have time outs and a social life beyond the daily grind of the lab.
