Research Interest
Dr. Smith's laboratory is interested in identifying and expanding hematopoietic stem cells for transplantation purposes. Projects include investigating the use of a fluorescent substrate (Aldefluor) to identify stem cells in a variety of tissues, developing methods for transplanting Aldefluor stained cells, using high throughput flow cytometry to evaluate conditions for expanding Aldefluor stained cells and investigating the genetic linkages between stem cell proliferation and differentiation. More information on the activities in Dr. Smith's laboratory can be found on the lab website at www.smithlab.org
